Appeasing the Queen

Every spring solstice, a maiden is selected from the outlying villages and brought to the city, where she will be presented as a sacrifice to Jendu, queen of the insectoid barbarians, in exchange for peace. Usually, the captured maidens accept fate and cooperate, but some short-sighted, selfish individuals fight every step of the way. Regardless, all are stripped and bound to the cross outside the lair at noon, to await the queen's desire.

Desperate to find her younger sister, Jenna agreed to meet the anonymous informant alone and without reporting to police. After waiting at the designated location for nearly an hour, she was on the verge of returning to her car and writing that strange e-mail off as a tasteless prank. But then she heard footsteps. Someone grabbed her from the shadows, and she struggled with all her strength until the pungent vapors of chloroform took away her consciousness.

Now waking deep within some filthy, long-abandoned facility, part of her is relieved to find Tori alive, but Jenna quickly understands that this stubborn attempt at heroism has only made the situation worse.
